As centric valves certified for zones 0/20, 1/21, and 2/22 under the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU, they meet the highest safety requirements for industrial applications. They work reliably in systems where explosive dust-air mixtures or hybrid mixtures of dust and gas may occur. As a result, they offer practical solutions for safety-critical processes, like the ones found in bulk solids handling in food processing, in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as in battery production.

These series have the decisive advantage of a low-dead-space design to specifically reduce product or dust deposits. The sealing and gasket surface geometries allow easier draining of media residues.

The conductive valve liners in the EPDM, NBR, or FKM materials are essential for explosion protection. They ensure controlled dissipation of electrostatic charges and prevent development of dangerous ignition risks. The elastomers’ suitability in accordance with FDA and/or EC 1935 has been proven and certified.

The valves meet the requirements of EN ISO 80079-36 and -37 that define specific requirements to non-electrical devices in potentially explosive atmospheres. A permanently integrated potential equalization system ensures that all conductive components are reliably grounded to the pipeline, enabling a comprehensive and consistent approach to explosion protection.

The series are available in wafer-type, lug-type, and double-flanged configurations, offering maximum flexibility for integration into existing installations and pipe systems. Special designs for outdoor applications are available in various stainless steels or cast materials with special coatings to meet demanding operating conditions or customer requirements.

In addition to the mechanical components, the available pneumatic and electrical actuators are ATEX-compliant as well. These actuators can be equipped with a number of options, including position indicators or limit switch boxes that are also approved for potentially explosive atmospheres. All actuator components provide precise and reliable control of the valve positions and are designed for safe operation under potentially explosive conditions. They can be fully integrated into automated system processes.

The Z011 and Z014 series are tested in accordance with DIN EN 14460 for maximum safety in hazardous areas. This standard ensures pressure shock resistance of non-electrical devices in internal explosions. This means that the valve will remain functional and withstand the mechanical stress profile if an explosion with a pressure increase of up to 10 bar occurs. This is a value that may occur, for example, in the case of propane ignition.

The TS cycle-lock valve offers safe explosion decoupling and precise dosing

The TS cycle-lock valve (Figure 1) represents yet another innovative solution by EBRO. It is designed specifically for applications in bulk solids technology with particular requirements for constructive explosion protection. The TS enables safe decoupling between two plant sections by using two gas-tight valves connected via an intermediate chamber. The goal is to allow material transfer between different pressure or explosion zones without creating a hazardous connection between them.

The explosion-decoupling configuration includes some design measures to ensure that at least one of the two valves remains closed at all times. This effectively prevents pressure surges, flame fronts, or ignition flashbacks from propagating in the event of an explosion—eliminating the risk of transmission to adjacent plant sections.

The TS has undergone type-testing for use in hybrid mixtures and up to dust class 3 and has been successfully tested with differential pressures of up to 15.4 bar. The intermediate chamber can optionally be flooded with inert gas or specifically degassed to further minimize the risk of ignition and enable the safe processing of combustible dusts or sensitive powders.

Available in nominal sizes from DN 50 to DN 1200, the TS offers versatile application potential across a wide range of industries. Smart control components, such as fill level sensors, position monitoring units, and automated cycle control, ensure process-safe dosing and deliver reliable, efficient operation, even subject to challenging requirements. The TS can be used in continuous processes as well as in batch applications.

Practical solutions for maximum safety and process quality

Use of the ATEX-compliant Z011 and Z014 butterfly valves in the individually configurable TS cycle-lock valve provides effective zone separation and safe material transfer in potentially explosive bulk solids processes.
